Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/30/2013

Number: 65

We checked the utility trail again, and conducted a short recount. We are starting to see more males in this bunch. We also observed a larval monarch, but it was on a Liatris. We have seen that before, but it was sickly. We tried to collect it but it launched itself into the grass and were unable to find it. We see no milkweed in that area. What there might be is spent and died back or has been mowed down in the brush near the roads. The common milkweed in this area is Green Antelope Horn Milkweed. Because of it's green flowers many people don't realize that it's a milkweed or a flower. They expect oranges and pinks like the ornamental milkweeds sold in the stores as bedding plants.
