We found a newly emerged female monarch butterfly in the Children's Learning Garden today, hopefully more monarchs are emerging on the grounds and taking flight. We are still feeding over 2 dozen monarch caterpillars for later tagging & release. The milkweeds on the grounds are rapidly dying back, so it's getting hard to find good green food for caterpillars this time of year -- a race against time. October is a big month for Monarch migration along the western coast of the Chesapeake Bay. Hope the good weather & the milkweed holds on for all of them! Thanks to VLM staff member Lisa Wright for the photo!
