Sadly, I saw not one monarch this year in Portsmouth or anyway actually in Maine or NH. Last year I counted 50 an hour, 5 years ago 100 per hour, 10 years ago 1,000 per hour. Very depressed about this zeroing out of Monarchs!
Last year I raised 15 cats, 12 survived and flew south during the migration.
None returned. I am still looking constantly and asking everyone if they have seen monarchs this year. Everyone says no. Hope next year they will make it back. Plenty of milkweed in NH and Maine roadsides, but none eaten. I have a large patch I watch everyday in my yard. I have observed and raised them for 40 years in NH. This is the only year I saw and heard of none. I pray every day they will come back and God will protect the monarchs and the milkweed! Hope they will be back next year in big numbers. Hurricane Sandy and droughts wiped them out, plus many predators, and spraying for mosquitoes and ticks didn't help either.
