Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2013

Number: 15

Late flow - day 8. It was misty this morning and no monarchs were on the move as I drove to the lab. During a walk through in the garden at 10AM I flushed up at least 14 monarchs and one just flew past my window. So, a fair number of monarchs are still in the area -- 2 days before the end of the "migration window" (4 October)- the date at which the sun angle declines to 47 degrees above the horizon at noon at this latitude. We see monarchs after this date but the numbers diminish rapidly and tagging shows that the probability of monarchs reaching Mexico is less than 1/15th that of monarchs tagged within the migration window.
