Here's an update from Sedgwick/Sargentville, Maine. Two Monarchs eclosed in the garden Sunday, Sept. 29, during warm, sunny weather.
During the past four days, these two Monarchs have been soaring and nectaring in the garden (Aster, Buddleia, Echinacea, Eupatorium, Heptacodium, annual tropical milkweed, Tithonia, etc).
One chrysalis attached to a Buddleia branch; the other to a cedar arbor.
On Wed., October 2, a new Monarch eclosed in the garden. Late in the day,
it was discovered in a gravel pathway edged with lavender. Sadly, the wings appeared crumpled and hardened.
Painted Lady butterflies are guarding the nectar beds, temporarily driving the Monarchs to back off. The Monarchs soar, and circle, and return for more nectar.
Other butterflies sighted during this period: Pieris (white and sulphur); Mourning Cloak; Red Admiral; blue.
I have photos, as needed.
