Under near perfect conditions (sunny, high 70's, mild wsw wind) the monarchs migrated through the south shore of Long Island. Through out the 4 1/2 hours I spotted over 250 monarchs fluttering by and feeding on golden rod. Usually they feed until 4 pm / 4:30 pm and then leave to roost for the night, however today most of them were feeding until 6 pm with sunset @ 6:30. Some monarchs fluttered away and returned back to continue to feed on the golden rod. They looked very healthy. As previously this year, the roosts were relatively small 4-6 monarchs and many single roosts. Some monarchs choose to roost on the golden rod instead of the pine trees. Tonight is expected to stay warm in the low 60's. What a beautiful sight.
