Number: 100
This week has been a bit of a roller coaster with the beginning presenting us with ~50 hungry little birds only 2 of which appeared to be mature male Rubies. As the week progressed, the numbers very gradually dropped to ~20 by Friday (Oct. 4). Saturday we had an active cold front move in and push a new crop to our feeders. This morning (Oct. 6) had us estimating ~100. They seem to rest in a Willow tree, a Knockout rose, and a large unknown bush with yellow clumps of flowers. They then swarm two nearby feeders. I watched this morning as an early sub-adult male (see image) attacked any other bird nearby, including a male Cardinal. He would run other hummers off "his" feeder and chase the enemy right through the bush he "owned". It was an amazing sight to behold. I could really use some help identifying the unknown yellow flower. I've looked at over 100 on the web with no success. It was sugested as a "trumpet vine" but I have those along our hedgerow and they are orange and much larger in size.
