Last nights temperature was 42 degrees with a daytime high of 63 degrees. It was mostly sunny with mild breezes. Feeder observance was limited to evening only and surprisingly at 5:45pm one lone hummingbird perched at the feeder for one long drink and then departed in a southern direction. Definitive determination of sex unknown but it appeared to be a large juvenile. No other sightings were observed during the evening. We have removed one of our three feeders while keeping the two most openly visible ones up. Each feeder is being kept at one third level with fresh 2:1 water/sugar mix. This has been the latest day in any hummingbird season for the last seventeen years at our residence that we have observed a hummingbird. The weather is forecasted to be in the low 70's for highs for about another week with night time temperatures dipping to between 40 to 50 degrees. We'll continue to maintain and monitor when we can, our two feeders for two weeks starting from our every new "last" reported sighting, whatever day that is. This 2013 hummingbird season has been exciting and full of surprises. Maybe there's one more surprise yet to follow and if not, I think we've got lots of smiles stored in reserve now to carry us through the winter till the 2014 season comes around. Take care all and keep reporting.
