Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2013

Number: 28

Over about an hour at noon today my wife and I tagged and released 20 monarchs (13 males) at The Lynde Conservation Area (near the Hawk Watch) in Whitby. It was sunny with temp of 18 C with a slight breeze. With the exception of one female they were all in excellent shape. They were nectaring on asters, clover, and the odd goldenrod, most of which is going to seed. When released, they almost all flew high into the air in a south westerly direction, heading along the shore of Lake Ontario. We observed approx. another 8 during this time, flying out of reach of my net.
This is the highest number I have ever tagged this late in October, the previous being on Oct 5, 2011.
