Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/08/2013

Number: 30

A roost of about 30 monarchs was spotted along the West Shore of lake Michigan. I have been watching off and on every weekday this month. In the past we have had thousands of monarchs pass our observation point as Concordia University Wisconsin during mid- October. This year we had very few during the normal peak in mid Sept. Our October numbers are higher than the Sept numbers this year. We have about 80 students monitor migrations along the Lake Michigan lakefront from late August through October. With brisk northwesterly winds the monarchs are funneled right over our campus which is on the westernmost edge of lake Michigan. They are blown to the lakeshore and fly south along the shoreline. We reported a late roost from this site a couple of years ago.
