Signs of Fall

Date: 10/09/2013

Number: 1

Late afternoon, I became aware that I was hearing a great volume of chirping and melodic notes -- I identified red wing blackbird sounds. I went outside to mow my lawn and saw that a couple of my next door neighbor's 90 foot tall ash trees were full of hundreds of birds. They were so high up I couldn't see the species but clearly it was a lot of red wings, maybe some starlings mixed in, I'm not sure. Their presence could explain why the millet feeder which usually still has lots of seed left in the afternoon had been emptied earlier in the day. My mower's quiet (cordless) so I heard the birds for another 15 minutes or so and then I noticed they were gone.

Had also heard one American Robin earlier in the day. I hadn't seen any robins for months, so I think she's passing through.

Weather is sunny and warm (70).
