Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/08/2013

Number: 30

There were so many monarchs enjoying my butterfly gardens on Monday and Tuesday of this week, so I could only estimate what I observed in a 15 minute time span. Aside from adults feeding on Mexican Milkweed and Blue Mist blossoms, there were several caterpillars of various sizes feeding on the milkweed.

I have hatched both Queen and Monarch butterflies in my classroom. In fact, there were some Queen butterflies in the mix when I saw so many Monarchs. The Monarchs spent several days in my yard. Could it be that they hatched in my garden? I saw some quite large instars on the milkweed. Every year, my students & I have a release in the spring.
