Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/08/2013

Number: 59

In the early morning of October 9th the roost count was 59 monarchs.  Early this morning (October 10) the count was 97.  The Monarchs here seem to be staying for now (as of noon). On October 8th, the count for flying past on part of the sky was 197 in 1.5 hours.  I am 1.5 miles east of Cherokee, TX.  I have not seen nearly this many in the 10 years we have lived here.  On our place they like Dwarf Crownbeard instead of the Golden Crownbread others tell me they like.  We have both. This is the best picture I've been able to get so far; it's windy here and the lighting is problematic.  I will try to get more.

Editor's Note: We are dating this report 8 October, assuming the roost formed that night but was not discovered until the morning of 9 October. We use evening dates for consistency.
