Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/10/2013

Number: 8

We have had a strange migration through here. Since March, we had 5 adult Ruby-throats, 2 males and 3 females. Later, they had their offspring. Numbers rose in late August, but never got to the 200+ we had 2 years ago or the 75+ last year after hurricane Isaac. This year, we peaked at only about 20. HOWEVER, a friend about 1/2 mile away had 75+ with only 3 feeders compared to our 9.

We do have a couple of really fat Ruby-throats on the feeders. These guys are about twice the diameter of others!

The migrations of 2011 and 2012 were our only reference. The Ruby-throats disappeared around this time and were replaced by Rufous Hummingbirds which stayed until late February. HOWEVER, we have not seen any Rufous Hummingbirds, yet.
