Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/13/2013

Number: 1

While visiting Chinook Fish and Wildlife area early this evening, I saw one Monarch butterfly flying low along Felling Road. I was driving slowly to observe birds and look for any Monarchs migrating through. I'd looked in other area parks late this afternoon, but saw no Monarchs until, finally, this one. It was flying just at the level of the grasses and other plants along the roadside; appeared to be exploring the area rather than making directional flight. The Monarch was faded, but flying strong. The fields in Chinook are dotted with patches of still-fresh-looking New England Asters as well as white asters, so at least the little traveler should find some fuel for the journey; Common Milkweed is abundant, with many seed pods releasing their fluffy contents.
