Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/15/2013

Number: 100

In Kendall County park, Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area, along the Guadalupe River, a huge roost was discovered. We reported 100 Monarchs, but are sure this is a low estimate. Monarchs were dropping out of trees down to extensive stands of Frostweed (Verbesina virginica) to nectar then going back to roost. The trees included Pecan (Carya illinoensis), Sugar Hackberry (Celtis laevigata), Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) and others. The roost size was estimated to be 8-10 acres.
