Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/15/2013

Number: 95

For night of Oct 15-16. 1730 to 1800.

Large grove. temp 53. wind north 15G25. 100% humidity. Raining.

Since I saw so few at this location at 1430, I was surprised to find many roosting monarchs. (They were hard to spot so I might have overlooked them at 1430.) I suppose in spite of north wind, the rain kept them from flying off and then the temp dropped too far. I saw 3 or 4 gliding at 10-15 feet which landed in trees. I found many already folded up roosting, mostly appx 15 ft from ground on south side of trees lining an interior space in the grove where some had been earlier in the day.

The attached image taken at 1745 is looking up into a small live oak. Taken with flash, so the light colored underside of the leaves show more than the dark upper sides. Image contains 63 Monarchs. In total I counted any others I could see in this grove, but not any location.
