Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/16/2013

Number: 1

I saw one Monarch nectaring on zinnias in neighbor's yard. Too far away to sex. I also saw one yesterday apparently migrating (flying south about 20 feet up.) I have only seen a total of 8 Monarchs this year (very discouraging.) Last year I was seeing Monarchs several times a week during the summer both at home and when I was traveling in the area and then 5-10 a day during migration for 3 weeks. Last year they were nectaring heavily on some hardy ageratum and goldenrod in an abandoned farm field across the road. This year I have yet to see a single one on the ageratum or goldenrod. (The drought last year (and the one in August and September this year) did decrease the size of the ageratum patches this fall.)
