Was very startled to see a monarch on our zinnias yesterday late afternoon. It stayed for at least two hours, drinking nectar. We usually don't get them so late. We also usually don't have zinnias this late but with the fall being so warm they just keep blooming. We usually would have had at least one frosty night by now but this year we haven't even had a light frost. I don't think temps have dipped below fifty.
(My daughter said during recess at her school, close by, the kids saw a monarch as well. She's a good naturalist, so I trust her ID, although of course I'm not entering it as an official sighting. I just mention it because we can't recall ever seeing them so late in the year. )
