Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/18/2013

Number: 20

I am a marine observer onboard a dredge traveling up and down Mobile Ship Channel. I have observed numerous Monarchs (and many other species) crossing the channel. There appears to be an influx of Monarchs when we pass Ft Morgan, AL travelling west. Tried to put lat long for Ft Morgan since that is where I see majority of them. Dauphin Island, AL is directly west of FT Morgan. It is between these 2 islands I see most of them. Note: It is making put a number for number sighted so that is not exactly accurate and only best guess.

October 20
I just got a good look (sorry no pic) and definitely Monarch, not a Queen or a Gulf Frit. At least a few sightings i did get a good look and defintely Monarch. Earlier in oct saw lots of other orange and black butterflies but knew they were not monarchs. The Monarchs seem to have a more "majestic" flight pattern. I have seen the monarchs out here in past years before but never reported it. I will be out here a few more weeks and will try to get a photo for you if possible.
