Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/19/2013

Number: 300

Woke from a late nap and found my backyard filled with monarchs by sunset they had all settled into the big pine in my backyard, directly over the swimming pool and about 20-25'in the air. They were loosely clustered over an area of about 12'x 5'; and then in 2-3 other places in the tree. The morning of the 20th, I set up the camera and filmed the cluster as the sun came up and warmed the group. By 9:30 they were all gone and it was easier to estimate their numbers in the bright daylight. Close estimate: 300. Then around 3a.m. the morning of the 21st, I went out with flashlights and didn't see a single one, despite there having been a few coming into cluster in the late evening. Evidently, the wind changed and they moved.
