4 monarchs spotted at Clearville Park on Oct 12, 3 on October 16 and 2 on October 17. Viewing time was 30 minutes each day. Nectar sources have diminished greatly and are difficult to find. There has been a persistent head wind (blowing from the south-west to the north-east) at Clearville Park since October 14. Since October 15 temperatures have been in the high to mid- 50s with frequent cloudy weather. The forecast is calling for very cold weather for the remainder of October so it is almost certain that these last butterflies will be “froze out”. These conditions are in sharp contrast to the first 2 weeks of October at Clearville Park when the temperatures were in the 60s and 70s, every day was sunny, nectar sources were abundant and prevailing winds were very favourable for migration. The peak migration occurred at Clearville Park during the first 2 weeks of October which is about 2 weeks later than the past 5 years.
