Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/20/2013

Number: 23

On a sunny day with temps in the low 60's and a moderate west wind I spotted 23 monarchs nectaring on golden rod. With the recent drought, the golden rod has been drying up and dying. Many of the monarchs were congregating on the same plant. They lingered feeding on the golden rod until almost 5:30, with sunset @ 6:10 pm. Nothing could distract them from nectaring. They all seemed famished. Once 5:30 came, one by one they found a pine tree to roost for the night. Although the evening temps dropped to the low 40's the roosts were still single and pairs of two. One tree had five monarchs, though they were spread out on the tree.
