What a day!
Yesterday, a monarch flew in front of my car as I drove west on the freeway near my home. Obviously migrating. It was around noon, only 56 degrees outside but sunny.
Today, my young son and I headed outside to play. We went outside around 10am (56 degrees), and were startled by two monarchs that flew out of the native plant garden around my mailbox. The monarchs were feeding on the NE asters. I grabbed my camera, and Jayden and I watched the monarchs for at least 1/2 hour, taking many pics before going inside for a snack.
About 90 minutes later, I loaded Jayden up in the van, and we headed down our driveway to the store. And to my surprise, as I reached the end of the driveway, one monarch flew up out of the garden again. I stopped, and took a few pics, leaving the door open for Jayden to have a clear view--and to my surprise, the monarch flew up to the van, bouncing repeatedly off the window right next to Jayden, before flying off to the neighbor's house to attempt nectaring from a rose. Jayden was staring in awe at the monarch.
After returning home, we found both monarchs still in the garden--it had been 4 hours since we first saw them! Poor hungry guys!
I wonder if they will still be in the garden at dinner time?
Here are the photos I took. http://www.flickr.com/photos/candy__kasey/sets/72157636331364494/
