Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/25/2013

Number: 1

My husband saw one Monarch butterfly in our side yard at ~ noon today. He said it was in the grass, then took off towards the South; looked fresh, not ragged. The past few days we've had cold temperatures, some snow showers yesterday, down to 29 degrees last night, with frost. I am amazed that the Monarch was here today and flew; perhaps it was tucked away somewhere in our gardens and finally warmed enough with the sun to fly. Temperatures in the high 40s today; 50s to 60 degrees predicted into next week. Sadly, despite covering as many flowers as we could to fight the cold, most of our nectar plants have been severely damaged; a few Verbena bonariensis and white asters still have viable flowers.
