Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/27/2013

Number: 4

I have my feeders spaced around my yard and viewable from different windows in my house. I have discovered that if I see one bird at a feeder, to go quickly and look out the windows at the other feeders in view. Often the birds will feed at the same time.

Today I saw 3 different male Ruby-throated hummingbirds at 3 different feeders at the same time through quick observation at different windows.

And then a short while later, I was out gardening and heard the familiar hum. Looked up to watch a female (or very young juvie male with no throat gorget feathers yet). She was feeding from the Firespike blooms at the east garden bed. Did not use a feeder. It's the first female I've seen in over a year. (I typically get adult males or juvie males in my yard.) The neat thing about her was that she was not spooked by me moving around in the yard, but instead went about her business. All the other RTHs do not show up to feeders or flowers if I am outside near them. This female was not concerned, so she is apparentely used to humans. 4 different hummingbirds sighted in one day in my yard! That is a very good count! I hope they stick around and over-winter in my yard!
