Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 10/30/2013

Number: 1

We have an adult male rufous hummingbird staying in our yard. He’s been here since August 24, and he was banded by a licensed bander on August 26. This is the fourth different rufous we’ve seen since the spring of 2011, and three of them stayed with us quite a while, though always one at a time. We have no idea why they keep showing up in our yard, but it is certainly a delight! We still have four hummer feeders up, and he visits them all off and on during the day. We’ve had some warm weather lately, so I think he also still has plenty of bugs to eat. It’s great fun to see him hovering about hunting for insects. We will be interested to see how long this little fellow stays with us, but the one that wintered with us last year did not leave until April. I’ll keep you posted.
