4:50 p.m. just found 2 more 5th instar caterpillars on the tropical milkweed and brought them in with extra leaves to, hopefully, continue their cycle inside. The spring population in Maverick County, if left outdoors, suffers about 99% fatalities due to fire ant and Tachinid fly predation. But the pre-migratory population of fertile females that move throu Maverick County in the fall have a higher success rate of only about 75% mortality according to my records this year. BUT this pre-migratory population was very late arriving and only preceded the actual migration by about 4-6 days. Attached photo is of a female that eclosed the morning of 11-03-13.
