Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 11/06/2013

Number: 1

Located in Fremont, Calif. southeast of San Francisco, the Coyote Hills Regional Park has a butterfly garden that's relatively tiny in size (around one tenth of an acre) yet attracts many monarchs year round because it contains a large number of milkweed plants, both native and tropical, and at least four non-native monarch nectar magnet plants: 1) Butterfly Bush, (buddleia davidii), 2) Chaste Tree (vitex agnus-cactus) 3) Bush Lemon Harigold (tagetes lemmoni) 4)Daisy Tree (montanoa grandiflora)

Here is a 7 minute video showing some of the nectaring monarchs, egg laying female monarchs and numerous monarch caterpillars I saw in the nectar garden on Nov. 6. The Butterfly Bushes and Chaste Trees were only barely in bloom at the time of my visit because they flower mainly from May - end of October and the Daisy Tree was only beginning to bloom as it flowers more strongly in mid - November - early Dec..  The Bush Lemon Harigold was in full bloom and attracting the most monarchs.
