Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 11/20/2013

Number: 1

Our male rufous hummingbird is still here (and has been since August 24). As noted in other posts, he was banded by a licensed bander on August 26. We had some cold weather a few weeks ago (down to about 26 or 27 degrees), but he did fine. I still have three feeders up, two near the house, and one about 15 feet away. I’ve read that the nectar will start to freeze at about 26 degrees, and the one out in the open did get slushy at that temperature, though it didn't freeze solid. Fortunately, the two near the house (both within 18 inches of windows) didn’t have any ice in them during that cold snap.
