Venable Room 303’s Journey North Report

The Southern Red Oak tree is big and it represents Venable school. Our tree is sturdy and renewable. The wood is used for furniture, like chairs and tables. The diameter of its trunk is 200 centimeters. Southern Red Oak trees are found in North America and can live for about 400 years. Our tree is over a century old.
This year, there weren’t as many acorns. Squirrels live in our tree in a drey. They are trying to find acorns.
The leaves have changed colors. A thousand leaves fall each year that are brown, orange, red, yellow and gold. The Southern Red Oak has leaves with pointed lobes and a bell shape at the bottom.
Our trees protection zone is about 160 feet. The roots begin twelve to eighteen inches below the grass. Our tree’s root hairs absorb water and vitamins for the tree.
November 25th, third graders and first graders planted Red Emperor tulip bulbs on the south and west sides of the school. It was hard because some of us hit rocks, clay and roots. It was cool because some of us got to plant with our sisters. Yesterday was cold with a high of 43 degrees Fahrenheit and the low was 33 degrees. The soil temperature when we planted was about 45 degrees. Our photoperiod is now only 476 minutes!
