Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 12/08/2013

Number: 1

I've attached a few more photos taken today during the winter storm, although they're not as clear as we'd like; camera needs to be replaced. In any event, the hummingbird is still visiting our feeder and in fact yesterday he was very active (at least 15 counted times) when we were home minus of course our Christmas shopping excursion for a few hours. On numerous occasions both yesterday and today, we observed the hummingbird, when leaving the feeder, fly straight down to our flower bed and disappear. He used to, of course, fly there when the flowers were still available, but unfortunately there's nothing left. We now believe that he could be living under our sunroom as there's a hot tub inside which probably keeps the floorboards warm and this area underneath is surrounded by lattice that he flies through, or perhaps he's living in one of our ornamental grasses (pampas or maiden) that's sitting up against the sunroom. I guess it's a little difficult to think that he might be living so low to the ground considering the danger of predators, however, between the warmth of the hot tub and some scarce food supply (spiders, etc.), it could be quite clever of him. I know there's a lot that we don't know or understand about these creatures, but we amateurs are just simply overwhelmed by his presence especially today with the snow, sleet and dropping temperatures expected tonight. We will of course continue to enjoy his presence as long as he chooses to stay with us.
