A rare (for the East Coast) and gorgeous Rufous hummingbird has been seen in Medford, NJ for several weeks. The homeowners graciously allow visiters to watch him at their nectar feeder. When I visited today he came every half-hour or so, but unlike our usual Ruby-throats, he was totally silent. The bird has survived below-freezing temps and a snowstorm blocked the feeder ports so a warming light now prevents the nectar from freezing.
