I have 3 RTHs that appear to be over-wintering in my yard. Two are adult males and the third one is a juvenile male. They have each chosen their territory in areas of my yard. I currently have 7 feeders up around my property. I saw them all very near "their" feeder or actually perching on them to guard them. I am wondering if the cold front has sent some more hummers into my vicinity and my birds are feeling threatened by their presence, so are guarding their feeders much closer today. Hard to tell since none of my birds are banded or color-marked. Sure wished there was a hummer bander near my area! Photo of a RTH near one feeder. Feeder is very clean, but the refraction and background plants make it look dirty. It is not. Sugar water is crystal clear and I keep it that way by cleaning them and refilling with fresh sugar water every 2-3 days. Not to worry!
