I currently have 3 different RTHs in my yard. Two are adult males and one is a juvenile male. They appear to be over-wintering in my yard and have each picked out their territories to guard near feeders. I have 7 sugar water feeders up around my property.
Today the cold front moved in and all 3 birds were guarding their feeders much closer than usual. I suspect that some new hummers have come in with the cold front and my hummers were protecting their food sources and trying to run off any newcomers.
Here is a photo of one of the adult males at a smaller feeder. The feeder and sugar water are clean and crystal clear. Not sure why the photos makes the feeder look so dirty. It is NOT! Maybe the light refraction and background plants. But the hummers seem to be content to stick around for the Winter months! Would love to host a few more. There are some more territories around my property for new birds to claim!
