Monarch Adult Sighted

Saturday, June 22nd I was doing a preliminary butterfly survey up at Lassen Volcanic National Park for the upcoming NABA Butterfly count. I wanted to check out a spot on the way home for Monarchs because last year on the way home from photographing butterflies I found two monarchs and a boatload of milkweed in the 'town' of Payne's Creek, Tehama County. Well, Saturday I did a late stop and in five minutes saw three Monarchs. I walked into the creekbed where all the milkweed was and did not see any cats or chrysalis. At the same time Ray Bruun found two more Monarchs a few miles away on his way home. That's five in one area! I'm sure with a dedicated search one could find more. Most of the milkweed was unsearched.

Payne's Creek is 23 miles east of Red Bluff on state hwy 36. Take the turn into 'town' and just past the store on your right (south side of the road) is a bridge over the creek. Cross the creek and park right there to walk the dry creekbed. The is quite a bit of milkweed to your west. Actually I saw two monarchs right near the bridge.
