The first wave of sandhill cranes have arrived in central Nebraska. Bill Taddicken, director of the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary reported, "They're just getting started." Recent blasts of Arctic air didn't deter the migrating cranes. Between 600,000 and 800,000 sandhills will visit this area of the Platte River between now and the first of May. They rest and feed here before continuing on the epic 1000 mile migration to their breeding grounds in Canada, Alaska, and Siberia.
