Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/19/2013

Number: 1

Today I saw two monarch butterflies for the first time this spring! A warm day of around 80 degrees F with a slight breeze. The first I saw around 3:15pm was flying in a zigzag pattern above the pasture grasses, but was not nectaring or egg-laying. The second one I saw around 4:30pm and this one too went past the wildflowers, but did not stop to nectar or lay eggs. They were too distant from me to be able to tell whether they were male or female. I was happy to see them and wished our milkweed was more abundant, but it had been a cool March and the milkweed was just getting going.
