Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/12/2014

Number: 1

We had 64 butterfly weed plants with new growth emerging before last week's freeze. That new growth died back and we are waiting for new growth to emerge once again.

Last fall we took cuttings from our butterfly weed plants. Many grew new roots while they were in the water over the winter. We have planted 40 of these plants last week.

In addition, we grew native antelope horn and green milkweed over the winter as well and have planted those in our native spaces.

Finally, we grew from seed common, showy, and swamp milkweed and those too are now in the ground or in pots.

Without having taken the steps to germinating or taking cuttings, we would not have had any milkweed for the monarchs passing through our area late in march.
