Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 02/05/2014

Number: 1

We noticed a hummingbird with a light blue forehead that has come daily to our feeders since 2/5/14 (today is 3/12/2014). I emailed an expert for help in identification. The response: "One of ours for sure. Blue is one of 7 colors we are authorized to use. This is almost certainly 1 of 5 birds... banded in Prairieville on 9 February, an SY-F BCHU. It was the only BCHU we banded at that site this season."
>
> "It isn't too unusual for hummers to wander in winter, especially RTHU, BCHU, and CAHU, but this winter wandering has been rampant. Some individuals have been noted up to 35 miles from the original banding site. I would appreciate it if you would pass my contact information along to your correspondent, so I can determine how far this gal moved."

"BCHU means Black-chinned Hummingbird. This one is a second-year female, i.e., hatched last year somewhere in the western states. Please phone or email...so she can learn more about this bird. And thanks for helping us add to the body of scientific knowledge."

I looked up the address where it was banded, and it was banded within a half mile of this sighting.
