Today on SoWestLep@yahoogroups.com Ken Davenport, a well known southwestern lepidopterist who lives and works in Bakersfield, Calif. wrote: "Everyone: While some Monarch Butterflies usually overwinter in Bakersfield, yesterday (March 13th) was the first day of the year I observed them in Bakersfield in 2014. One was in my yard in mid- AM and several others would be seen in a Park in the Children's Center where I work in the afternoon. The Monarchs usually first arrive the first week of March, possibly delayed this year until after we had significant rains. We know many Monarchs leave the Pacific Coast overwintering site heading east to the Sierra slope, then travel northward. None I saw had visible tags.
