Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted

Date: 03/16/2014

Number: 1

I sighted a female Anna's hummingbird on March 16th at my kitchen window feeder at 2:02 p.m. It was my first sighting of any hummingbird this year. The Anna's species is usually the first to arrive here, and I know that they do not typically migrate far south like other species of hummers do. This particular female usually retreats high up into the east side of the pine tree where we have had an Anna's nest for the past few years. Morning temperatures have been mostly in the low 20's since she arrived. She is still here and obviously alive as a result of taking the torpor option last night after we had a temperature of 13 degrees at 7:15 this a.m. on March 22. I immediately replaced the frozen feeder at that time. It rocketed up to 17 degrees by 8:30. Amazing how they survive.
