At 1pm today I saw a monarch flying past our barn. Then later around 6pm I saw another monarch flying low back and forth over our field and stopping twice to nectar on small false garlic flowers (Nothoscordum bivalve). Monarchs love to get nectar from false garlic flowers and thankfully they are particularly abundant this year. Unfortunately, due to a cool March, our native milkweed (Asclepias viridis) has not yet come up. Today was quite warm being in the high 70's and a beautiful partly cloudy day. I have added a photo of some false garlic flowers -- the monarchs were flying too fast for me to get any photos -- so happy to see them!
