Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/29/2014

Number: 1

On this beautiful spring day the monarch females arrived to the nursery to lay their eggs. It is a joy to see these monarchs who have journeyed so far, who have endured so much. It is inspiring to watch them diligently and carefully selecting milkweed to lay their eggs on. They often have faded wings showing their age. Every now and then I would see one of them very briefly nectar on a blackberry blossom, or an Indian paintbrush, or on the little white false garlic flowers. But mostly they seek out the milkweed with great determination, zigzagging low back and forth over the pasture grass and wildflowers. The photo is of one of these beautiful monarchs laying her eggs today.
