I continue to see one to two Monarchs per day on my travels around Austin.
Over the weekend, I walked a couple roadsides to evaluate the condition of native milkweeds.
I examined nearly one hundred plants in three locations West of Downtown Austin. I could only find A. Asperula, antelope horns milkweed. In one location, there were green and zizotes milkweed last summer.
All the plants I examined were less than a hands breadth (about 8 inches) long. Many had multi stems from a single tap root. Several had the beginnings of flower buds forming at the end of the stems. I estimate flowering will not begin for several weeks. Until then, the milkweed is pretty difficult to detect by humans, I wonder how obvious to passing Butterflies. I found no eggs, cats or leaf damage. There were no Monarchs visiting the milkweed while I was there.
