Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/31/2014

Number: 1

Altus and I have been watching monarchs all day. We have observed a dozen close up between ten am and 3 pm, mostly faded females flying low and stopping on the native A. asperula plants in our pasture. Altus went out a few minutes ago to check three plants in front of our RV and found a first instar on one of the A. asperula plants ... Kodak moment! We drove to the new desert that is forming between San Antonio and Abilene the past three days, at they are thinking that! They heard thunder Friday morning, nary a drop. My brother has been staying in the pasture and counting monarchs and said the flow of monarchs held steady or increased a bit each day from five last Wednesday to eight they saw on Saturday. This is still much better than last year but less than the years before that. Our pasture is 65 miles ESE of San Antonio and 640 miles almost N of the sanctuaries. We have been counting monarch flow thru the pasture for about fifteen years.
