Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/10/2014

Number: 1

Sighted large adult Monarch. At first sight I thought perhaps it was a swallowtail because of the light color and size; however it looked like a monarch in flight. I followed to see if I could get close enough to get a better id and picture. I was able to determine it is a Monarch, the wings appeared to be in good condition although lighter in color which I assume is from wear, I was unable to get close enough to determine sex. The Monarch was flying well and covered ground quickly in the meadow and along Broken Arrow Creek on our 3 acres before I lost sight. The winds are high today and it paused only a few times to nectar on Henbit. Milkweed is not up in my yard yet. I have not yet checked the fields where Viridis is plentiful and usually visible from the road. I certainly hope there is some nearby.
