Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/10/2014

Number: 1

The last 10 days have had a dramatic effect on the vegetation in our area

We now have native asperula across our lot of about 6-8 inches in height
Purple thistle blooms and prairie verbeena are abundant in the surrounding fields
The roadside ditches are teeming with wildflowers…and the Bluebonnets are spectacular this year
Looks like we’re finally getting our spring after a colder than normal winter

The lot I drive by to work every day regularly has 2-3 Monarchs nectaring on the thistle blooms
When I stopped to get a closer look I also found numerous 8-10” asperula….some already starting to develop blooms
The winds have been fairly constant (alternating every few days between southerly and northerly) and the temperatures have been in the low 80’s

No eggs yet in any of the areas that I have checked..…but with the recent native milkweed development..…that may change
Seems that most of the Monarchs we have seen thus far were quickly heading north and seemed uninterested in the vegetation
That pattern seems to be changing lately…..
