Sightings report image

Date: 04/13/2014

Number: 1

Today I spent all day checking the milkweed (Asclepias viridis) in our pastures. The milkweed comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and one never knows exactly which ones will have the monarch eggs or larvae on them. The eggs and/or larvae can be on the leaves or amidst the flower buds. This photo is of a tiny newborn 1st instar on some still unbloomed milkweed flower buds. It is always a special joy to check a milkweed plant that I had flagged as having an egg and now find instead a baby monarch larva!
