Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted

Date: 04/16/2014

Number: 1

Black-chinned hummingbird? The only species of hummingbirds I've ever seen in Missouri is the Ruby-Throated. Until today. It definitely wasn't a RT. A hummer was perched at the feeder for over five minutes, so I got a very good look at him from the side. The evening sun was shining on him from the front. The wing feathers, head, and back were coal black with a thin band of white around the throat. Bill was also black. The breast was lighter in color, but shadow from the feeder and my position kept me from seeing the color clearly. Very unusual to spot a different species other than RT in Missouri. The nearest species I can find is the black-chinned. I wanted to get a pic, but if I moved, I was afraid I would scare him, so I just froze and stood there watching him.
